Political Newcomer

Devon Jiang

Every day, when I converse with my parents at dinner, a familiar tune is in the background. That tune is “This is CNN, Breaking News.” This phrase is now synonymous with an alert about another unorthodox action Donald Trump did while president.

Political puffery is what much of the breaking news embodied in the Trump administration, but myself, millions of Americans, and maybe even you, paid close attention to the stories.

At the end of Trump’s four years of Presidency, we reflect on what we paid attention to. Instead of talking about the education policies or corruption in the US Capitol, we looked into the Nunes memo and debated whether Mexico could pay for the Southern border. These topics are useless to what we, as Americans, care about. The government is supposed to enrich its constituents’ lives, not provide another circus play or a dramatic thriller.

Even as I say this, though, I am struck by how little many Americans have in retention towards the policies that affect them every day. That reason is why they elected Donald Trump. The people wanted something new and exciting, which is what we got. Now, everyone is bringing platitude and advocating for a boring President instead of a President that follows their ideals.

As a Gen Z who lives in a very Democratic county, I get that many die-hard Trump supporters will shun me because of the stereotypes brought towards the “young people.” Meanwhile, moderates and centrists may ask me, “what do I bring to the dinner table, the same thing as CNN?”

Using Partisan Satire, I don’t plan to do another late-night comedy show, exposing Ted Cruz for another inept mistake or criticizing Trump for using Mar-a-Lago. I also won’t focus on the political trolling; Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon monopolize that.

Partisan Satire will examine the types of policy that is or not being passed in Washington and analyze what our public servants are doing.

This journey that I am treading is only starting. With weekly posts, daily briefs, videos every day, and weekly summaries, we have a lot to cover. Partisan Satire will ensure that these posts are enticing and are worth your time.
