The Issues of 2024

From the Presidential election to the Gubernatorial elections, the 2024 campaign season is unprecedented. In addition to recurring policy debates over the economy and immigration, Gaza and the Palestinian fight for statehood are wild cards for both Republicans and Democrats. Meanwhile, states are contending the future of their cities as they struggle to bounce back from pandemic closures.

The most important issue is the economy. The United States had initially experienced record inflation rates. However, inflation has slowed since last year, and the Fed is planning to cut rates this year. Voters must now assess if they want to punish the current administration over the first two years of governance.

Kamala Harris intends to enact family care policies first proposed by Joe Biden. Meanwhile, Trump plans to cut taxes and raise tariffs on Chinese imports.

The Economy

Voters are increasingly concerned about the effects of illegal immigration on American society. In 2023, border agents arrested over two million arrests along the border. Furthermore, Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent undocumented immigrants to urban centers, raising voter fears on migrant crime.

Harris wants to continue Biden’s recent restrictions on migrants seeking asylum. Trump calls for the “largest mass deportation operation in history.”

Migrant Crime

Americans are typically apathetic towards the government as the solution to policy issues, especially Tea Party Republicans. They are hoping to capitalize on their movement by eliminating several executive agencies like NOAA in search for a more libertarian governance.

Harris rejects the efforts to weaken the role of bureaucrats in the government. Trump advocates for the politicization of the Executive Branch with Schedule F.

The Government

Since 2020, America has been indirectly involved in two wars, Ukraine and Gaza. Although Ukraine and Israel initially had broad support against their counterparts, Democrats and Republicans are now split on continuing financial support for both parties.

Harris pledged to continue aiding Ukraine whilst calling for a Gaza ceasefire. Trump wants Ukraine to sue for peace whilst providing aid for the Israeli military.

Foreign Wars

Abortion

The Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade continues to anger public sentiment as states ban the procedure. In 2022, Democrats performed better than expected because of abortion. They are looking to galvanize their voters on this issue with Kamala Harris now on the top of the ticket.

If elected, Harris hopes to pass legislation permitting unrestricted abortions before 24 weeks. Trump has deferred to the states for final judgement.
